Jesus Has Power Over Sickness and Death
On May 10, Ms. Paula and I taught a lesson that I will share with my new kiddos today.
When we taught it, they had no idea what that lesson would come to mean in the days ahead.
The Bible Point that day was simple:
Jesus has power over sickness and death.
Jairus, a man with a dying daughter, asked Jesus for help. As Jesus traveled to Jairus’ house, a woman who had been sick for 12 years reached out and touched His robe, believing she would be healed. Her faith healed her.
Then, on the journey to Jairus’ house, the news came that his daughter had died.
But Jesus went anyway.
He took her by the hand and said, “Talitha koum!” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”
And she stood up.
Jesus has power over sickness and death.
I remember repeating those words together with Paula and our kiddos that day. And I couldn’t help but look at her as we said them together.
There were words we didn’t say out loud, but I know she knew my heart.
We clung to that truth.
And in the weeks that followed, those kiddos clung to it, too.
Week after week, we prayed and waited and anticipated Ms. Paula’s return. Anytime we asked for prayer requests, little hands would shoot up.
“Ms. Paula! Ms. Paula!”
And one of them would almost always chime in:
“Jesus has power over sickness!”
And I agreed.
Every time.
Because it’s true.
God’s Word is always true.
Today, I will teach that same story again, but I will do it with a heart that is broken by the physical absence of my friend.
My heart hurts.
I miss her.
And I wish these kiddos could have known her. She would have loved them.
So today, we will open God’s Word together.
We will hear again about the woman in Mark who had been sick for 12 years and reached out in faith to touch Jesus’ cloak.
We will hear Jairus receive the devastating news that his daughter had died. And we will hear Jesus tell him:
“Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
Then we will read those beautiful words:
“Talitha koum!”
“Little girl, I say to you, get up!”
And she stood up.
Jesus has power over sickness and death.
My heart can rejoice even while it still feels broken, because I know something now that I didn’t know when we taught this lesson together on May 10.
Paula received healing.
Her faith became sight.
The healing we prayed for came in a way that I would not have chosen, but she is no longer sick. She is with Jesus.
And so, don’t mind us today in Room 208.
We are probably going to make a mess.
There will be glitter.
There will be jewels.
Tons of them.
We might get a little loud.
Because today, just like we do every week, we are going to open God’s Word and learn today’s truth:
“Jesus Gives Life and Healing.”
Everywhere Jesus went, He showed that He has power over disease and death.
And that is something worth rejoicing about.
So today, we will learn.
We will remember, this Bible Truth.
We will laugh.
We will rejoice.
Because the truth that Paula and I taught together on May 10 is still true today:
Jesus has power over sickness and death.

If we don’t have the hope of Heaven, and if we don’t trust and cling to our Savior during times like this, what do we have?
I think about that often.
And I can’t help but think about my friend. If she hadn’t given her life to Jesus, her eternity would be so different.
