Lord, Teach Us to Pray

We had such a great morning!

Today, our lesson was about the disciples asking Jesus to teach them how to pray. We were in Luke 11 and Luke 18, talking about prayer, why it matters, and what it looks like to come to God with confidence and persistence.

But there was one part of our lesson that really stayed with me.

Jesus was praying.

And the disciples asked Him, “Lord, teach us to pray.”

Think about that for a minute.

These men walked with Jesus. They watched Him heal people. They watched Him calm storms. They saw Him do things they could not explain. They saw His power in ways most of us could never imagine.

But what seems to have really captured their attention was His prayer life.

They had seen what Jesus could do, but they also saw something about His relationship with His Father.

And they wanted to know more.

They wanted Jesus to teach them how to pray.

That really gets me.

Because if Jesus made prayer a priority, how much more should I?

How much more should we?

Prayer is personal for me. My testimony is full of moments that remind me of God’s faithfulness, and I especially remember learning the value and power of prayer when I was in third grade.

God doesn’t waste a moment.

He used people in my life to teach me, pray for me, and help me understand what it means to seek Him. And now, I get to watch these children begin learning that same truth.

Prayer isn’t just something we do when we need something.

It is how we come to God.

We talk to Him.
We seek Him.
We trust Him.
We bring Him our worries, our questions, our needs, and our praise.

Our memory verse for this unit is Jeremiah 29:12–13:

“Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

My prayer is that these words become more than a verse they can recite. I pray they become a truth they know.

And honestly, I think that is something all of us need to remember.

Maybe prayer has become something you used to do more often. Maybe life has gotten busy. Maybe you aren’t sure where to begin. Maybe you’ve been carrying something for far too long without bringing it to God.

It isn’t too late.

You can start today.

You don’t need perfect words. You don’t need everything figured out. You just need to come.

Because the God who invites us to call on Him is the same God who promises,

“I will listen to you.”

Lord, teach us to pray. 🤍
